How Laser Skin Resurfacing Can Heal Your Sun-Damaged Skin

As the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer give way to the cool, crisp days of fall, memories of all that warm weather and bright sunshine start to fade.

But if you spent lots of time in the sun this summer, your skin may be holding on to memories of sun exposure that you’d really rather forget. Because of sun damage, your skin may look looser, coarser, or more wrinkled than it did at the start of summer. You may even have new age spots or areas of uneven pigmentation that cause you to frown you when you look in the mirror.

Fortunately, laser skin resurfacing can help rejuvenate tired, sun-damaged summer skin. Here at Women’s Healthcare of Princeton, our team of care providers, led by Dr. Maria Sophocles, can revitalize your skin with rejuvenating laser treatments.

We share more about how laser skin resurfacing can help heal your sun-worn skin.

Your skin’s response to the sun

Sun exposure can be hard on your skin. The sun’s ultraviolet rays can damage skin, causing age spots and wrinkles to form. Fun in the sun can coarsen your skin, even after your summer glow fades. And reductions in collagen and elastin proteins can contribute to a loss of firmness and elasticity that leaves your skin looking loose and old.

Laser skin resurfacing helps erase some of the damage caused by exposure to the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays.

How laser resurfacing works

Laser skin resurfacing is a simple procedure that our registered nurse aesthetician performs here in our office in Princeton, New Jersey.

We start by numbing your skin with a gentle cream. Then we use a specially designed medical device to deliver precisely focused beams of light energy into your skin. This energy penetrates your epidermis and heats up the tissues deep within your skin.

After laser treatment, your skin may appear red or slightly swollen. But this signifies that an important process is beginning. Your skin responds to laser resurfacing treatments by undergoing a rejuvenating healing process. As healing occurs, your body forms healthy new tissue and ramps up the production of collagen.

As collagen increases, your skin appears firmer, tighter, and smoother, and fine lines, age spots, and wrinkles become less apparent. Over time, the tone and texture of your skin improves, leaving it looking younger, fresher, and more vibrant.
