I felt so much lighter knowing I could heal:” A patient shares her MonaLisa Touch experience

“I felt so much lighter knowing I could heal:” one of our patients shares her MonaLisa Touch experience

MonaLisa Touch (MLT) is a clinical procedure to regenerate vaginal tissue by creating new collagen and new blood vessels. (See our post for more on what MLT is--and is not--here--Liezle, please hyperlink the first post on MLT.) MLT received FDA approval in the U.S. in December 2014. The first machines were shipped to the U.S.—one to Stanford, one to Ohio, and one to our office, in Princeton. Women’s Healthcare of Princeton (WHP) began using MLT in February 2015.

MLT is the only laser treatment for the vagina offered in our practice, as it has the most scientific data behind it: 35 published studies show its clinical efficacy. 90% of our patients report statistically significant improvement in their clinical symptoms (internationally, the figure is similar, around 83%). One of our patients spoke with us about her experience with MLT at our office. Our conversation is below.

WHP: Why did you seek MLT?

Patient: I wanted to try MLT due to my vaginal dryness and discomfort, which prevented a comfortable sexual relationship with my husband.

WHP: Please describe what the MLT experience was like for you physically, clinically, and emotionally.

Patient: Physically, the experience was comfortable. I did not have any discomfort or any issues during the procedure. The healing from MLT occurred within 24 hours. After the procedure, I felt better and my symptoms were relieved. I would say my body responded very well to the treatment. I also want to add this is not a painful procedure; it comes with minimal discomfort and quick healing.

Clinically, I am a health care professional who looks to natural healing first for myself and my clients.  What is better than laser therapy that uses light to accelerate the body's natural healing processes? This light puts the body in a position to heal itself.  I was happy with the results and the expertise of Dr. Sophocles, her background, and her office’s use of MLT. I don't know if I would clinically have received the same results at the hands of a less experienced practitioner.

Emotionally, I was deeply concerned with the changes I was experiencing and thought they might be permanent. I wasn't willing to take medication, if there happened to be any.  I can't tell you the relief I felt when, through the natural healing of light, I began to feel better. Walking out after the first treatment, I felt so much lighter knowing I could heal.

WHP: Would you recommend the MLT treatment to other patients? Why or why not?

Patient: I absolutely would recommend MLT to other women experiencing vaginal changes, pain, and dryness. MLT can relieve these symptoms while also providing an opportunity for you to rejuvenate yourself on a personal level. The procedure helped me feel more like a woman again. I had not expected MLT to work so effectively, and with such immediate results, especially after just one round. I had this surge of confidence as a woman--that I was doing this for myself.
