I met with Rebecca Callahan for the purpose of discussing my perimenopause symptoms. I am 45 years old, and still regularly menstruate, but have started having significant mood swings related to my hormone shifts. I came to this practice specifically because she was listed as a practitioner by the North American Menopause Society as a Menopause Society Certified Practitioner. I waited months for the appointment, and when I got in front of Ms. Callahan, I explained my symptoms - almost all mood related - and their exacerbation with my monthly menstrual cycle. I explained how my cycle has changed, and the intensity of my symptoms in the 10 days leading up to my period, which remains regular. I explained the sleeplessness, and rage, and low libido. I explained my interest in HRT, having heard of the success other women are having with hormone related mood issues. She said the because I still menstruate, I am not a candidate for HRT, which is in opposite of what research I have conducted to prepare for our appointment. I explained I am doing intermittent fasting to help balance my hormones, and to that, Ms. Callahan suggested I come in again in the future for a specific appointment to discuss weight loss and management options, but that she could not discuss my weight in this appointment. I had not indicated that I was concerned with weight-loss, where I am at a healthy weight - I am trying to balance my hormones. I explained all of the supplements I am taking to help with my symptoms - magnesium, Omega 3 Fish-Oil, Vitamin D, Vitamin K. She did not have any feedback, nor suggestions, and did not ask about the dosage of each. With respect to the mood swings brought on by my hormones, she suggested meditation, that I get a different therapist, and prescribed me an SSRI. This is after I explained my hesitancy to take an SSRI, where I had a really difficult coming off of the one prescribed to me postpartum - that it made me very ill. She said that, while she was clear the mood swings were hormone related, and SSRI was the best she could do for me. She said to try it, slowly (over the course of 6 weeks) ramp up to the therapeutic dose, and we would check in at a follow up appointment after two months at the therapeutic-level dosage. Having no other options, and desperate to feel better, I made the follow up appointment, filled the prescription, and started taking the meds. Not four weeks later, I received a call from the scheduling office for Women's Healthcare of Princeton, telling me that they needed to cancel my follow up appointment with Ms. Callahan, but they would move it to a different day. That appointment was set. Several hours later, I got another call: this time I was told that Ms. Callahan is no longer seeing patients for anything other than weight loss and weight management, and do I want to switch my menopause follow up appointment to a weight management appointment? No - I am not here for weight management, I am here because I have a hormone imbalance. I asked to see Dr. Sophocles instead, because she is the only other person in the practice listed as an MSCP. To that, I was asked "She no longer accepts insurance, so do I want to pay out of pocket?" I was not asked about the SSRI I was placed on or about the follow up to discuss the meds. This call was made at 7:30 pm, when I was in the middle of getting my toddlers ready for bed. So, without any ability to think, talk, or even ask intelligent questions, I made an appointment with a random doctor I have never heard of, mainly out of desperation and in order to get off the phone in a chaotic moment. When the office opens this morning, I will cancel that appointment. I have never felt so dismissed, mismanaged, or immaterial to my own care in my entire life. I have written this all out because I read reviews. I trust other people's experience to inform my decisions. Had i known this could be my experience, I would have definitely kept looking for help elsewhere.

I’m very grateful for Dr. Ramani’s consultations and exams, which helped me on the way into hysterectomy and are helping me now in the middle phase of recovery, when the surgeon releases patients but patients still feel compromised, and are still healing. I feel myself in good hands. Since I can’t see the wounds, it helps to have a voice of experience to guide me. Thank you.
